door to Beth's room was wide open. The night-light from the hallway
shone into her room. When he looked around the door frame, he
could see her lying face down on the bed. She had not even bothered
to turn down the covers.
Seeing
that she had passed out on the bed, the intruder walked over to
her side. He took her by the left arm and turned her over on her
back

he reached over to the nightstand by the bed. With his left hand,
he opened the top drawer; with his right, he felt for the revolver
that Beth kept there. Slowly he withdrew his hand from the drawer.
In it he held a two-inch barreled .38 special.
As
he held the gun in one hand, he tried to sit Beth up with the
other. Even though she weighed only 110 pounds, he could not control
the dead weight with one hand. Finally, he realized he was fighting
